This February, songwriter and pianist Frances Yonge unveils a 'sleep' song, the winter months stirring a quiet creativity which has birthed a 17 minute EP to relax listeners and lull them to sleep.
In her song, 'Precious', you will hear a hypnotic piano motif, dreamlike vocals and lyrics inspired by imaginings of sleep. Frances asked friends what images came to mind as they went to sleep, then weaved them into lyrics. A gleaming ocean, purple light, luminous stars and velvet skies were mentioned, and one suggestion alluded to a pinball machine ‘pinging dreams around’ which became a sound effect in the song.
The 'go to sleep' mantra was inspired by hypnotist Glenn Harrold's 'relax and sleep well' meditation. The emphasis is on safety and 'precious' in the title is meant to be a comfort so the listener can rest, knowing they are loved and special. If the listener isn’t asleep by 11 minutes there is a second motif which Frances wrote for her adult children, calling them to safety and sleep.
Frances' husband, sound engineer Paul Sayers used technical elements to create an expansive, three dimensional feel…
“I felt it was important to blend different types of reverb and delay on the vocals to create the right sense of space and depth. Dreamlike, but not too washed out. There are also quite dry sounds too, to support the sense of depth and create contrast. Low pass EQ on the backing vocals helped to push these behind the lead vocal”
Frances speaks from her soul in ‘Precious’, using her creativity to enter the intriguing and secret world that we all enter as we sleep, driven by a genuine desire to create a song that is calming and healing. Available on all listening platforms from 20th February 2026
